Pay Less with STARS

At North American University, we are committed to making higher education accessible and affordable. Introducing STARS, an initiative where eligible full-time undergraduate students who receive less than the maximum Pell Grant will only pay the difference between their awarded Pell Grant and the maximum Pell Grant each semester (excluding winter and summer).

With STARS, you can pursue your academic goals without financial constraints. Join a community that values your aspirations and is dedicated to your success

STARS PROGRAM FAQ’S

Eligible students will be notified within 30 days of being admitted to NAU with a valid 2025-2026 FAFSA on file.

If your FAFSA is selected for verification, all required documents must be submitted to the Financial Aid Office by July 15, 2025, to determine eligibility.

The grant will cover the remaining balance of any tuition and mandatory fees not covered by other grants, scholarships, exemptions, benefits, and/or waiver programs received by the student. It does not cover food, housing, books, supplies, or miscellaneous charges including parking fees, installment plan fees, late fines, athletic fees, etc.
Students eligible to receive the maximum Pell Grant will have a student aid index (SAI) between -1500 and 0 after completing the FAFSA. Follow these steps to find your SAI:

  • Log in to StudentAid.gov using your FSA username and password.
  • Select your processed FAFSA submission.
  • Select “View FAFSA Submission Summary.”
  • Select the “Eligibility Overview” tab.
STARS is only available for the fall and spring semesters.
Financial aid assistance will be provided if your Pell Grant eligibility changes in upcoming academic years.
Due to the grant, STARS recipients are not eligible to receive a credit balance refund or overpayment. However, students may be eligible to receive a credit balance refund if they choose to borrow student loans.

*Direct costs – costs that appear on your account statement and are paid directly to the University (i.e., tuition, fees, food, housing).

STARS is one of many financial assistance programs offered at NAU. We encourage students to submit their FAFSA and review NAU Scholarships for additional opportunities.

Eligible students must maintain full-time enrollment in courses that count towards their degree plan to qualify. Courses taken outside of your degree plan must be paid for out of pocket.
Yes, all U.S. resident undergraduates who are currently enrolled and meet the eligibility requirements will qualify starting with the 2025-2026 academic year.

If you withdraw from NAU, you will no longer be guaranteed to continue in the STARS. However, NAU will offer you the maximum financial aid you are eligible for when you re-enroll or re-apply.

No, but international students may be eligible for other academic scholarships offered by NAU. Visit NAU Scholarships for additional opportunities.
