The NAU library would like to thank all the participants of its 2024 National Hispanic Heritage celebration for making it an enjoyable and successful event. This event took place on Wednesday, September 18, 2024, at the Library from 2:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. Celebrating the distinctive voices and experiences of Hispanic/Latino Americans and honoring their history, travels, and accomplishments here, at our highly diverse university, is truly invaluable.
The entire tone of the gathering was set by the Hispanic décor and Hispanic artifacts displayed in the library. The highlight of the event was the popular Hispanic game Loteria, which Mr. Hinojosa hosted. It is a board game of chance similar to Bingo, where participants learned numerous vocabulary terms with Hispanic accents. There were five rounds of this game, and Mexican toys and gift cards were among the awards following each round. Congratulations to the winners!
In addition, participants received an opportunity to create hand-crafted Mexican flowers. Such flowers made out of tissue or crepe paper are used for parades, birthday celebrations, weddings, and Mexican holidays. These colorful flowers enhanced the vivacity of the event, especially when participants wore them at the photo station with sombreros, capturing memories.
Participants left the library with a piece of authentic Mexican chocolate and a delightful smile on their faces. Out of the total of 53 participants, which included students, faculty and staff, 35 left feedback for the event, 34 of which were smiley faces .
